Marc Verboord works as an Associate professor in the Department of Media & Communication in the Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication at Erasmus University Rotterdam. He is member of the Executive Board of the Erasmus Research Centre for Media, Communication and Culture (ERMeCC). Since February 2013, he is Associate Editor of Poetics. Journal of Empirical Research on Culture, Media and the Arts.
He teaches in the International BA in Communication and Media (IBCoM), the MA Media Studies and the Research MA Sociology of Culture, Media and the Arts. He acts as coordinator of the Research Master program, and the BA Thesis trajectory in IBCoM.
His research interests concern a variety of themes in the sociology of culture and media, mostly revolving around the question how cultural evaluation occurs in particular temporal and spatial contexts: (a) cultural omnivores, (b) literary socialization and reading behavior, (c) cultural classification and symbolic production, (d) cultural globalization, and (e) culture and internet. He has published in several scholarly journals including American Sociological Review, Poetics, American Behaviorial Scientist, New Media & Society, European Sociological Review, European Journal of Communication, Cultural Sociology, and Popular Music & Society.
Marc Verboord studied Language and Culture Studies, with the specialization Marketing and Sociology of Books, at Tilburg University. He received his PhD in Sociology from Utrecht University in 2003, at the Interuniversity Centre of Social Science Theory and Methodology (ICS). His dissertation examined the influence of literary education and parental socialization on the reading of fiction books in the period 1975-2000. He worked as post doc researcher in the NWO funded research program Cultural Canons and Cultural Capacities (UvT, 2002-2004) and the NWO VICI-project Cultural Classification Systems in Transition (EUR, 2004-2009).
