 Regional Collaborations

Erasmus University Rotterdam is represented in several regional collaborations. Through these collaborations, we contribute to solving major social issues that require intensive joint efforts.

CEPHIR is the Academic Workshop for Public Health for the Rotterdam-Rijnmond, Zeeland and Zuid-Holland Zuid regions. We connect science, policy and practice through research, answering social questions and sharing knowledge. This is how we contribute to a healthy society, reducing health inequalities and underpinning effective health policy.

Convergence is a collaborative model linking social, technical and medical knowledge and methods. Convergence is a collaboration between Erasmus University Rotterdam, Erasmus MC and TU Delft, started in 2020.

Solving complex contemporary problems

Convergence is even seen in scientific literature worldwide as the best way to solve complex contemporary problems in the fields of healthcare, energy, food, climate or water. TU Delft, Erasmus University Rotterdam and Erasmus MC are entering into a Convergence Alliance to achieve a better understanding and approach to the challenges facing the Rotterdam delta and urban deltas worldwide.

The alliance consists of five pillars:

Leiden University, Delft University of Technology and Erasmus University Rotterdam are working together in the strategic alliance Leiden-Delft-Erasmus Universities.

Working together on social issues

Solving major social issues requires intensive joint efforts by universities, in close cooperation with social partners. By using their high scientific quality, the breadth of largely complementary portfolios and their location in each other's vicinity, the three universities can work together inter- and multidisciplinary on regional, national and global challenges.

Four societal themes are central to this partnership. These guide current and future education and research in the LDE context. Eight Centres and programmes are active on these topics:

  • Sustainable Society
  • Inclusive Society
  • Healthy Society
  • Digital Society

Medical Delta is a transdisciplinary partnership of more than 1,000 participants from Erasmus University Rotterdam, Erasmus MC, TU Delft, LUMC, Leiden University and four South Holland colleges (De Haagse Hogeschool, Hogeschool Rotterdam, Hogeschool Leiden and Hogeschool Inholland).

Innovative solutions for sustainable healthcare

Together with companies, healthcare institutions and governments, they work on innovative solutions for sustainable healthcare. Medical Delta does this with transdisciplinary research programmes and practice-oriented living labs, among other things. This makes Medical Delta the hub of the healthcare & innovation ecosystem in South-Holland and beyond. A group of Medical Delta professors has been appointed from EUR and Erasmus MC.

SmartPort is the knowledge hub of the Port of Rotterdam. We bridge the gap between the port business community, knowledge institutions and governments, encourage alliances, fund scientific research and promote the dissemination of public knowledge.

The port of the future

As a knowledge hub, SmartPort has one central goal: knowledge development for the port of the future (2030-2050). We do this based on questions from the Rotterdam business community and to accelerate innovation. SmartPort is a not for profit partnership of the Port of Rotterdam Authority, Deltalinqs, Municipality of Rotterdam, Erasmus University Rotterdam, Delft University of Technology, TNO, Deltares and Marin.

Since 2022, within the Rotterdam-Rijnmond region, there has been more and more cooperation for better care and assistance for “persons with confused or misunderstood behaviour” and the current consortium of partners has formed. Subsequently, the consortium has united into the current regional knowledge workshop (RKOG-RR), which will be funded in the coming years through a grant from ZonMw.

Participating partners oa: care institutions, knowledge institutions, police, local authorities (e.g. municipality of Rotterdam) in Rotterdam-Rijnmond region. Erasmus University is one of the initiators.

Regio Deals

Through the Convergence Resilient Delta Initiative, Erasmus University Rotterdam is involved in the following four Regio Deals, with much of the funding coming from the central government.

The Region Deal Smart Delta Drechtsteden focuses on making strides to improve life and opportunities for residents while making the environment healthier. The focus is on using technology to drive social progress.

Improving lifestyles and living environment

Resilient Delta will play an important role by contributing through the SPRING research consortium and the T-Roffa Tree Lab. SPRING focuses on working closely with governments, businesses, citizens and various stakeholders to conduct research aimed at improving lifestyles, enhancing the living environment and increasing the life expectancy of residents.

Maassluis, Rotterdam, Schiedam and Vlaardingen - the Waterwegregio - are joining forces to improve the quality of life, housing and work in their municipalities.

Stimulating prosperity

Resilient Delta focuses on several areas. Some topics RDI will delve into are enhancing liveability, promoting equal opportunities, stimulating prosperity, implementing interventions at neighbourhood level, encouraging citizen participation and more.

The Resilient Delta initiative will work with other Regiodeal partners such as Capelle aan de Ijssel and look into the specific problems facing these “new towns”, in order to jointly come up with sustainable solutions.

The Resilient Delta initiative will work intensively with 14 municipalities, the Rhineland Water Board and other partners in the region to address these issues and make the horticulture region future-proof.
