Proficiency tests

Not all foreign school-leaving certificate(s) meet the entry requirements of Dutch research universities. Based on your application, EUR admission officers will inform you whether you need additional training and/or entrance exams to be able to be admitted to the programme of your choice.

For example:

Going for an English programme? For many foreign secondary school diplomas, additional English will be part of the entrance examinations of EUR programmes. In most cases, this means that you need to take a TOEFL or IELTS-test before you can make a request for admission. Check the admission requirements of your programme for more information. Exemption is possible if:

  • You are a native speaker of one of the following countries: Australia, Canada (with the exception of Quebec), Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, United Kingdom and the United States of America;
  • You are obtaining an International Baccalaureate with English A at Higher or Standard Level, or English B at Higher Level;
  • You are obtaining a European Baccalaureate with English as first or second language;
  • You have obtained your diploma(s) or went to secondary school for at least two and a half years in one of the following countries: Australia, Canada (with the exception of Quebec), Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, United Kingdom and the United States of America.

Going for a Dutch programme? You’ll need to pass the NT2-II-exam or the Dutch entrance exam of the Colloquium Doctum, depending on the programme, to show that you have a sufficient command of Dutch before you can start a degree programme. The NT2-II-exam is held almost every week. You can also check the application procedure of your programme for more information. Exemption is possible if:

  • You can provide evidence that the Dutch language was a subject in the final examination of your secondary school;
  • You can prove that you have attended a secondary school in the Netherlands at VWO (pre-university) level for at least three years.

If your level of mathematics does not meet the admission requirements of the EUR programme of your choice, you can also sit an entrance examination. This exam is the Mathematics Deficiency Test. Please check the admission requirements of your programme for more information. Please note: some programmes work with deadlines that will make participation in the Mathematics Deficiency Test offered by us in July not relevant. You’ll find information about deadlines like this on the programme page of the programme of your choice. Please reach out to your programme if you have any questions on the subject.
