Below is a brief summary of the dissertation:

Our living environment plays a significant role in our health. This dissertation explores how factors such as air pollution, noise exposure, and urban design are linked to physical and mental health in older adults. The analyses are based on data from large European population studies.
The findings show that exposure to fine particulate matter and ozone is associated with disruptions in hormone regulation and DNA synthesis, which may increase the risk of disease over time. In areas with high levels of air pollution, residents were also found to have a greater risk of developing atrial fibrillation. Traffic noise proved harmful as well, correlating with unfavorable blood lipid profiles that may contribute to cardiovascular disease. Additionally, people living on lower floors in high-rise buildings showed higher mortality rates, possibly due to increased exposure to traffic-related air pollution and noise.
Mental health was examined in relation to both air pollution and green spaces. Fine particulate matter was associated with more depressive symptoms, particularly among the oldest participants. In contrast, living near green space appeared to have a protective effect. Although the link between air pollution and dementia was less clear, residents with the highest exposure levels did display an increased risk.
In short, where and how we live affects both body and mind, often subtly, but with far-reaching consequences that may only become apparent over time. Since no one can fully escape their living environment, this concerns us all.
