Clinical Internship at Erasmus MC

A clinical elective at Erasmus MC offers a unique opportunity to experience healthcare and medical education in one of Europe's leading academic medical centres. By joining a clinical department, you can deepen your knowledge in your field of interest, gain exposure to different approaches to patient care, and broaden your international perspective. 

Clinical electives are intended for advanced medical students who wish to expand their clinical experience in an international setting. In addition to enhancing your medical knowledge and skills, an elective at Erasmus MC allows you to experience the Dutch healthcare system and explore potential future career interests. 

Eligibility and Duration 

To be eligible for a clinical elective, you must: 

• Have completed at least four years of medical training; 
• Be enrolled at a partner university or participate through the Erasmus+ programme; 
• Meet any department-specific requirements. 

Clinical electives can last up to a minimum of four weeks per department. 
Placements are always subject to departmental availability. 

Please note that you are required to arrive at least five working days before the start of your elective. During this time, you will undergo a mandatory MRSA screening at Erasmus MC. External MRSA test results cannot be accepted.

Application process

The application process consists of the following steps:

Step 1 – Submit your internship request
Complete the online application form and provide all required information about your proposed internship, home institution, and funding arrangements.

Step 2 – Availability check by Erasmus MC
After receiving your application, Erasmus MC will review your request and check whether a suitable placement is available within the requested department and period.

Step 3 – Request for supporting documents
If a placement is available and your application can be considered further, you will be contacted by the International Office and asked to submit the required supporting documents (this varies per department).

Step 4 – Submit your documents
Please combine all requested documents into one PDF file and send it by e-mail to the International Office within the specified deadline.

Step 5 – Assessment of your application
Once all required documents have been received, Erasmus MC will assess your application and inform you of the outcome.
