Research Internship at Erasmus MC

Erasmus MC conducts internationally recognised research across a wide range of disciplines, from fundamental biomedical sciences to translational and clinical research. Our researchers work to improve the understanding, prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease, contributing to innovations that make a difference in healthcare worldwide. 

A research elective at Erasmus MC offers international students the opportunity to become part of an active research environment and gain hands-on experience under the supervision of experienced researchers. Research projects provide valuable training in scientific thinking, critical analysis and evidence-based practice, while allowing students to explore a field of particular interest. 

Eligibility and Duration 

Students enrolled in Health Sciences, Medicine, Biology, Biomedical Sciences, or other Life Sciences programmes are welcome to apply for a research elective if they have completed at least three years of university level education. 

Please note that: 

• Research projects at Master’s level typically require a minimum stay of six months; 
• A good command of the English language is required (CEFR C1 / IELTS equivalent); 
• Knowledge of the Dutch language is generally not required; 
• Erasmus MC does not provide funding for research electives. 

Research placements are subject to the availability of supervisors and suitable research projects within the departments.

Application process

The application process consists of the following steps:

Step 1 – Submit your internship request
Complete the online application form and provide all required information about your proposed internship, home institution, and funding arrangements.

Step 2 – Availability check by Erasmus MC
After receiving your application, Erasmus MC will review your request and check whether a suitable placement is available within the requested department and period.

Step 3 – Request for supporting documents
If a placement is available and your application can be considered further, you will be contacted by the International Office and asked to submit the required supporting documents (this varies per department).

Step 4 – Submit your documents
Please combine all requested documents into one PDF file and send it by e-mail to the International Office within the specified deadline.

Step 5 – Assessment of your application
Once all required documents have been received, Erasmus MC will assess your application and inform you of the outcome.
