All PhD candidates:

  • must comply with the general rules of Erasmus University Rotterdam, laid down in the Doctoral Regulations.
  • have a master's degree in Law or Criminology. Current master students who will graduate before the preferable start date, are welcome to apply. Bear in mind that proof of a master’s degree is a formal requirement for admission.  For some research projects an exemption is possible, and a master’s degree in another discipline relevant for your research project is also eligible: please elaborate on that in your motivation letter. It is up to the prospective supervisors to determine whether you will have a sufficient (legal) knowledge for this PhD project.
  • can demonstrate relevant scientific research skills.
  • have excellent oral and written skills in English (see language requirements below).
  • Language requirements:
    You are required to upload an English proficiency test. This is not applicable if you obtained your degree in the Benelux or in the UK, Ireland, USA, Canada (except Quebec), Australia or New Zealand.

Admission requirements Erasmus University:

  • IELTS: 7.0 (min. 6.0 for all sub-scores)
  • TOEFL: 94-101
  • C1
  • The language test results should not be older than two years.

PhD researchers with a scholarship:

  • have obtained a scholarship already, with a minimum amount of monthly at least the minimum amount that the INDOpens external requires to get a residence permit)
  • Some scholarship organization ask a hosting offer in the application procedure. In that case, please check whether the scholarship you apply for fulfils the requirement of the minimum amount, and follow the requested procedure. In case of a positive decision after the interview, a conditional offer can be given (which will become an unconditional offer when the scholarschip is obtained).
    Please be aware this procedure takes time. Therefore, you need to start the procedure 6 months before the application deadline of the scholarship organization.
  • The duration of a PhD trajectory in the Netherlands is 4 years, funding should also be for 4 years.
  • You are willing to relocate to the Netherlands.
