The Erasmus Institute for Philosophy and Technology hosts a monthly research seminar as an open forum for discussion, welcoming all interested participants. In September, we will be joined by Dr. Søren Riis (Centre for Digital Citizenship, Roskilde Universitet) for a talk on “Making Sense of Time Machines.”
In the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, it has become increasingly evident that modernity has produced technologies and machines that do far more than manufacture and transform the material world around us. Technologies also shape our experience of time. They can manipulate, displace, compress, and extend temporality. We live, in this sense, in the age of time machines.
From this perspective, time no longer appears merely as an immutable background against which human activity unfolds. Instead, it becomes a variable that is continuously shaped and transformed through technological artifacts and practices. Time is therefore not primarily an abstract principle but a concrete phenomenon that manifests itself through technological mediation. Understanding how technologies shape our experiences and expectations of time is therefore fundamental to understanding technology. One cannot fully grasp a crucial dimension of technology and the ways in which technologies affect human life, without recognizing how technological artifacts and systems generate, transform, and mediate diverse temporalities in our world and everyday lives.
This presentation gives an initial insight into how time emerges as a product of technological mediation and visualization. As technologies render time visible, measurable, and actionable, it becomes apparent that temporality is deeply embedded within technological systems and practices. This leads to an understanding of time as a technologically mediated and performative phenomenon.
Against this background, the article addresses a series of central questions: How can technologies be understood as time machines that transform temporality? How can their influence on temporality be conceptualized? Is it possible to develop a typology of different kinds of time machines? And finally, what do such time machines reveal about our broader understanding of technology?
