The Erasmus School of Philosophy (ESPhil) has appointed Dr. Katharina Bauer, Associate Professor of Practical Philosophy, as its new Engagement Officer.

ESPhil has a long-standing tradition of public philosophy and active collaboration with societal partners in Rotterdam and beyond—ranging from politics and media to arts institutions, schools and neighbourhood initiatives. ESPhil scholars contribute to pressing societal debates by (re)defining key concepts, clarifying arguments in polarized discussions, and co-creating new models, for instance for democracy, education and alternative economic systems.

With the appointment of an Engagement Officer, ESPhil reinforces its commitment to being the place to be for engaged philosophy and critical reflection on engagement at Erasmus University Rotterdam.

A new role for engagement: Katharina Bauer

In her new position, Bauer will streamline and coordinate ESPhil’s engagement activities, aligning them with EUR’s strategy as an “engaged university”. She will support interconnected efforts in engaged research, engagement-oriented education, Life Long Learning, and student-led initiatives.

Bauer shares the vision that “engaged philosophy means philosophy in exchange and communication. Instead of adapting the world to our theories, it starts from listening to others. Curiosity, listening and learning activate our philosophical engagement with the world and the current challenges we face.”

She aims to strengthen ESPhil’s unique profile of engaging with societal and academic partners—by cultivating listening practices, connecting diverse perspectives in inter- and transdisciplinary contexts, and translating philosophical insights into inclusive discussions and tangible impact.

She will draw on her extensive experience with engagement and impact—most recently in an NWO project on migration with dignity. Bauer also contributed to debates at EUR on ethical frameworks for research with societal partners, participated in the EUR Sustainability Dialogues, and serves as Academic Director of the transdisciplinary MA programme Societal Transitions.
