Our Sport is for Everyone - OSE

OSE, a programme funded by the European Commission (CERV), is led by the Erasmus School of Philosophy in collaboration with the Gemeente Rotterdam, NOC*NSF, Nederlandse Basketball Bond (NBB), Koninklijke Nederlandse Zwembond (KNZB), Koninklijke Nederlandse Cricket Bond (KNCB) and KNHB.

Sport does not exist in isolation. Like the rest of society, the field of sport is facing significant integrity challenges, ranging from match fixing, commercialisation, and vandalism to issues related to participation, inclusion, and gender diversity. Sport reflects broader societal transitions and often serves as a space where these challenges become visible and tangible. As a result, they call for thoughtful reflection, strong policies, and decisive action.

One of the most pressing challenges is discrimination. Despite growing awareness of the need to combat intolerance, racism, sexism, and exclusion, discrimination remains a widespread societal problem and is deeply present in sport as well. Many sports organisations recognise the urgency of the issue, yet still lack the knowledge, skills, and practical tools needed to address it effectively.

From a philosophical perspective, sport also offers a unique space for reflection on the values that shape our communities. Philosophy helps create room for genuine dialogue and mutual learning between athletes, coaches, policymakers, and researchers. It invites us to ask foundational questions: why do we practice sport, and what kind of sport do we teach our children to value and embody? Reflecting on these questions helps to reveal the often-hidden norms and power structures that shape inclusion and exclusion.

Philosophy, however, should not remain abstract. The aim of this project is to foster a reflective attitude in the locker room, on the field, and in the boardroom - where everyday decisions and interactions ultimately define what sport stands for and who truly feels welcome to participate.

The European CERV-project OSE (Our Sport is for Everyone) responds to this challenge by strengthening awareness, expertise, and resources to counter discrimination in sport. Through collaboration between Erasmus University Rotterdam and its consortium partners, the project seeks to support sports organisations in building more inclusive practices and environments. By doing so, OSE aims to contribute to the transition towards a more inclusive, fair, and resilient sporting culture.
