Coded Bias

Documentary Screening + Discussion on AI and Bias

How is it possible that facial recognition does not recognize dark-skinned faces accurately? That is the question that sends MIT researcher Joy Buolamwini down the rabbit hole of the blind spots of AI in the documentary Coded Bias. While AI is becoming a more prevalent force in our everyday lives, it can perpetuate social biases and even actively harm or disadvantage groups in society without us even being aware of this. Join us during this screening and discussion of Coded Bias to find out how this happens and what we can do about it!

As we navigate a world driven by data and automation, the need to safeguard individual civil liberties in the wake of artificial intelligence becomes more urgent with each passing day. Coded Bias follows M.I.T. Media Lab computer scientist Joy Buolamwini, along with data scientists, mathematicians, and watchdog groups from all over the world, as they fight to expose the discrimination within algorithms now prevalent across all spheres of daily life.

After the movie there will be a panel talk on the role of social biases within AI, and what we can do to combat them. The panel will include:

  • dr. Shu Li, Assistant Professor of Law and Artificial Intelligence (ESL). How can we combat biased AI systems from a legal perspective? And who can be hold accountable?
  • dr. Claartje ter Hoeven, Professor of Organizational Dynamics in the Digital Society (ESSB). What is the societal impact of biased AI systems? How does it influence the well-being of ghostworker?

  • Ella Akin, learning innovation consultant at the Rotterdam School of Management. How could we improve these biased AI systems through innovation?

  • dr. Helen Tibboel, Project lead Monitoring and Research Diversity and Inclusion. What do we already know about social equity? And how could we use existing research about social equity to combat biased AI systems?
