Authoritarian and anti-democratic forces appear to be on the rise all over the world.  Meanwhile, it seems that the real problems of our time cannot be addressed effectively: the cost of living keeps increasing while finding an affordable place to live is almost impossible. With the upcoming Dutch elections in our sights we ask ourselves the question: Is Democracy Dying?

  • Prof. dr. Carolien van Ham (Radboud Universiteit) will go into the democratic erosion we have been seeing across the (Western) World. How do democracies falter? What’s the situation like in Europe and the Netherlands? And: What can we do ourselves to strengthen democracy?
  • Dr. Reinout van der Veer (Radboud Universiteit) will talk about the effects of the current shifting power dynamics on international organizations. What is the role of organizations like the UN and EU in such a changing world? If international laws and treaties are not followed, what’s the point of these organizations? And what can role can and should countries like the Netherlands play?
  • More speakers TBA

This Current Affairs Lecture is organized by Studium Generale and Prof. Michal Onderco.
