Over the past decades, images and videos captured by citizens in wars and conflicts have become increasingly important. They have not only shaped mobilization patterns and accountability processes, but sometimes even the conduct of warring factions. At the same time, it is becoming easier and easier to fabricate visual evidence, and sometimes actors do not even try to appeal to facts anymore. Can we then still believe the images of conflict we see in our feeds?
During this Current Affairs Lecture, Anita Gohdes will visit us to talk about her research on social media and conflict online. Drawing on cases from the Iran-Israel-US and Russia-Ukraine wars, as well as from recent protest movements in Turkey, Kenya, and Georgia, she will trace what the post-evidence era means for both citizens and armed actors engaged in conflict.
Anita R. Gohdes is Professor of International and Cyber Security at the Hertie School in Berlin. She works at the intersection of international security and technology, and is the author of the book “Repression in the Digital Age: Surveillance, Censorship, and the Dynamics of State Violence”, published with Oxford University Press, which received the 2024 Goldsmith Book Prize.
