Find out in DOPE, a theatre and dance performance about drug trafficking and the ways in which the drugs smuggling connects different parts of society. Before the performance, explore the research and meet the researchers behind the Container Stories, where research takes the form of film, spoken word, rap, and even a quiz.
On Tuesday 8 December, DOPE and the Container Stories come to the Erasmus Paviljoen on the Woudestein campus. There are two performances, and students, staff, researchers, partners and other interested visitors are welcome to attend free of charge.

From research to the stage
DOPE was developed by WAT WE DOEN and Lloydscompany, in collaboration with FORT-PORT, a research project led by Erasmus University Rotterdam and funded by NWO.
Through FORT-PORT (Focusing On the Right Things in the Port of Rotterdam), criminologists, mathematicians, computer scientists and historians from Erasmus University Rotterdam, Delft University of Technology and Utrecht University investigate drug-related crime and human smuggling in the Port of Rotterdam, as well as how these forms of crime are tackled.
The project aims to contribute to public debate on organised crime and strengthen the resilience of professionals and communities.
Container Stories
Before the show, the researchers present their Container Stories: short, artistic interpretations of their research, ranging from film and spoken word to rap and performance.
They offer a glimpse of what can happen when researchers and artists work together to find new ways of sharing knowledge.
DOPE
DOPE is touring theatres across the Netherlands from 3 October to 20 December 2026.

Where science meets art
Reaching an audience outside of the world of academia does not always mean you should explain a scientific article in a simpler way. Sometimes it means you should find a different form. Dance, theatre, music and other creative forms can make research accessible to people who probably never read a scientific article or attend a research seminar. At the same time they can offer an existing audience a different way of looking at a complex issue and thinking about it.
