Fast fashion is one of the world’s most creative but also most polluting and exploitative industries: stimulating overconsumption, creating waste and pollution, contributing to biodiversity loss and wildlife disruption while also exploiting its workers. In this JUSTRA event, we want to dive deeper into what makes the current fashion system so unjust and unsustainable and discuss some of the future pathways envisioned for transitioning towards a more just and sustainable fashion system.
The fast-paced industry is fuelled by an insatiable hunger for the new and enabled by cheap synthetic fibres produced from fossil fuels like gas and oil. That is not to say that solutions are not propping up on the horizon. The industry is rife with creative searches to resolve some of its most glaring problems and transform itself: initiatives like biofrabricated garments, new ethical business models, and the reuse and repair of clothing all aim at limiting the environmental impact of our clothes’ production and reducing the pace at which we wear them out.
About the event
We will be holding a midday movie screening, showing the documentary Fast Fashion: The Real Price of Low-Cost Fashion, followed by a panel discussion with expert academics, practitioners, and activists in the field of fashion.
