About the symposium

This afternoon, we will actively seek opportunities to strengthen the collaboration between the port of Rotterdam, the city and Erasmus University Rotterdam. In three steps, we will explore how we can jointly chart a course towards a sustainable and meaningful relationship that contributes to the challenges of today and tomorrow:

  • Step 1: Focusing on the knowledge and talent needs of the port and the city
  • Step 2: Demonstrate the value that the EUR – in collaboration with its partners – already brings to this need
  • Step 3: Focused discussion on where and how the EUR can strengthen its significance for the city and port through its research and talent development

Programme

  • 13:30 - Walk-in with coffee
  • 14:00 -  “Van start”
    • Start by moderator Geert Maarse (science journalist and presenter)
    • Brief welcome: Larissa van der Lugt, Director Erasmus UPT
    • Significance and purpose: Jantine Schuit, Rector Magnificus EUR
  • 14:15 – “Scherpstellen van de kennisbehoefte vanuit haven en stad.” Joining the panel discussion:
    • Boudewijn Siemons (President-director Havenbedrijf Rotterdam)
    • Robert Simons (Council member Haven, Economie, Horeca en Bestuur)
    • Victor van der Chijs (Chair Deltalinqs and Rotterdam Port Promotion Council (RPPC)
  • 14:45 – Lightning talks: “Waardevolle inzichten voor de toekomst van de haven en stad” During a series of short and powerful presentations, EUR researchers will share their latest insights and valuable findings from recent research relevant to the port. These ideas make a concrete contribution to the development of Rotterdam and its port. Be inspired by a number of short pitches from various research areas, such as innovation and the application of AI, human capital, energy transition, subversion, cyber security and the future economy of Rotterdam.
  • 15:45   Break
  • 16:00  - Table discussions (dedicated moderation by Erasmus UPT)
    • Table 1 – Economic development in the context of broad prosperity We recognise the critical need for a robust economy, healthy trade, and strong businesses. These are currently under pressure in the port of Rotterdam. At the same time, businesses are also facing the societal challenge of becoming sustainable. What knowledge and insights are needed to develop new revenue models? How can we help policy to facilitate and guide this process effectively?
    • Table 2 – Innovation and AI New innovations and technologies, such as artificial intelligence, bring both opportunities and threats. What knowledge and insights can be developed to use these technologies responsibly and effectively in the port, while also considering their ethical, economic and social impact on society? How can we ensure that the port can connect to this transition in an impactful way and implement AI research and knowledge in practice?
    • Table 3 – Human capital: labour market and talent development The issues facing the city and port require talent with the right training and knowledge. In many areas, there is still room for improvement in this regard. How can we ensure that talent and transitions reinforce each other rather than missing each other? How can we create the right learning environments and accessible infrastructures to reduce barriers and strengthen the connection between EUR and society?
    • Table 4 – Energy transition, market and governance The transition from fossil fuels to clean(er) energy and circularity – including in the port and city of Rotterdam – requires different market and financing models, new partnerships and new governance regimes. How can the knowledge of EUR and its knowledge partners be used to help accelerate these transitions?
    • Table 5 – Resilience Cybersecurity, undermining, but also possible physical threats are issues that the port of Rotterdam and therefore the city have to deal with. What insights are needed to increase the resilience of the port and the city?
  • 17:00 – Solution-focused summary & closing remarks by, among others Jantine Schuit (Rector magnificus EUR)
  • 17:30 - Drinks & Bites
  • 19:00 - End of Symposium
