Meanwhile, an increasing number of scholars address what is called the ‘ethics of algorithms’ and the ‘ethics of AI’, and discuss if this use of technological systems can improve the quality of decision-making or, instead, aggravate issues related to discrimination. The nature of discrimination is controversial, since there are many forms of discrimination and it is not clear whether they are all morally wrong, nor is it clear why they are morally problematic and unfair.

Types of discrimination

How many forms of discrimination can one distinguish? What makes discrimination wrong? And what does it mean to be discriminated by an algorithm? By covering this wide range of topics, the lesson aims to present and explore key questions and arguments concerning the ethics of discrimination in the context of algorithmic decision-making.
