Erasmus Research Centre for Media, Communication and Culture (ERMeCC) and the Erasmus Initiative Vital Cities and Citizens (VCC) co-organize a lunch lecture on Tuesday January 7. Jolynna Sinanan, a Research Fellow in Digital Media and Ethnography at the University of Sydney, will give a lecture about Mobile Media and Mobile livelihoods in Australian urban and industrialized areas.

Australia’s coal mining workforce in the northern state of Queensland is largely dependent on a long-distance commuting workforce. Workers who rotate between shifts of seven days on site, living in accommodation nearby and seven days off site when they are at home are arguably intrastate migrants. Largely from a middle class, middle to high income population, long-distance commuting workers in the mining industry have received little scholarly attention in migration studies and in studies of the mining workforce, which tends to focus on lower-income groups from developing countries. This seminar examines the intersection of professional, urban to rural workforces, media, mobility and family life.
