To celebrate the start of the year, Studium Generale will once more organize our famous Open Air Cinema together with CineEUR!

"What are you doing in my swamp?!" Shrek has become a cultural icon in the past 25 years since he first graced us with his presence on the big screen. With the anniversary of the first movie this year and Shrek 5 in tow in 2027, it is high time that we celebrate this modern classic!

Not only is Shrek a great movie, his impact on meme culture and the internet cannot be understated. How is it possible that Shrek keeps resurfacing online? Why is Shrek both love and life? And what about Lord Farquaad and ā€˜E’? Idil Galip will tell us all about this when introducing the film. No prior knowledge of Shrek memes needed but always appreciated.

Dr. Idil Galip is lecturer in new media and digital culture at the University of Amsterdam. In her research, she focuses on memes and the way they are made and shared.

CineEUR is a new student association of Erasmus University for all things cinema, from watching to creating.

Synopsis Shrek (2001):
Shrek (Mike Myers) goes on a quest to rescue the feisty Princess Fiona (Cameron Diaz) with the help of his loveable Donkey (Eddie Murphy) and win back the deed to his swamp from scheming Lord Farquaad.
