Below is a brief summary of the dissertation:

This thesis focuses on cerebrovascular diseases and their etiology, incidence and prognosis in a population-based setting. It describes time trends on the incidence and prognosis of stroke and its subtypes, extends the knowledge on vascular risk factors of stroke and the clinical relevance of transient neurological attack in stroke risk, and explores the interrelations of cerebrovascular and neurodegenerative pathology in stroke etiology.
