Brief summary on the aim of the doctoral thesis:
Typhoid fever is caused by Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi ȋSalmonella TyphiȌ, represents a major global health concern, and is endemic in many low- and middle-income countries ȋLM)CsȌ, including Bangladesh. Typhoid fever is becoming harder to treat due to increasing antimicrobial resistance ȋAMRȌ. Azithromycin and third-generation cephalosporins are often the only options available for empiric treatment and the pipeline of new drugs is running dry. As one component of efforts to address these issues, the typhoid conjugate vaccine ȋTCVȌ has been proven to be an effective tool to control the disease burden and has already been introduced in several endemic countries, including Pakistan, Liberia, Zimbabwe, Samoa, and Nepal. Bangladesh will introduce the TCV soon. (owever, many knowledge gaps regarding the epidemiology, AMR, and genomic diversity of Salmonella Typhi remain in low-income developing countries ȋLM)CsȌ such as Bangladesh. The aim of this thesis is to narrow these gaps by exploring the genomic diversity and AMR in Salmonella Typhi in Bangladesh.
