Summary:
Replacements of the elbow joint are less common than replacements of other joints, such as hips and knees. Therefore, also less is known about the elbow replacements. In medical literature, they are known to be plagued with worse outcomes and more complications. This thesis covers some historical aspects on the development of contemporary elbow replacements, and analyzes aspects of patient care which may contribute to better outcomes in the future. For example, a cast after surgery is not found to be useful, yet is an enormous burden for - most - elderly patients. And omitting this cast does not lead to more complications, whose impact on long-term outcomes is analyzed as well. Short-term complications had an impact on the long-term outcomes, and thus should be managed better now we have these insights. Also, the follow-up of elbow replacements is analyzed, and a term of (at least) five years appears to be useful to detect, and treat, problems in an early phase.
