Below is a brief summary of the dissertation:
Children born with oesophageal atresia (OA) are exposed to major medical procedures almost
immediately after birth. While OA was initially regarded as a purely surgical problem, it is now
increasingly recognised as a complex congenital condition that extends beyond just primary
surgical treatment. The aim of this thesis was to identify morbidities experienced throughout life
by patients born with OA and to offer various interventions to improve the clinical care. The
research projects that are part of this thesis contributed to this aim by 1) assessing the perinatal
management and intervention therapies during infancy 2) assessing comorbidities and risk
factors during childhood 3) improving effectiveness and efficiency of the endoscopic surveillance
programme for adults.
