Our systematisch review shows a previous musculoskeletal injury as most important risk factor for a running related injury (RRI) in short-distance runners. A higher Body Mass Index (BMI), higher age, sex (male), no running experience and relative low weekly running volume are strong  risk factors for the development of a RRI in short-distance runners. RRIs seem to have a complex multifactorial origin.
Our prospective cohortstudies in 3768 recreational runners show an incidence of 7.8% duringa running event and a 3 months incidence of 13.5%-16.3%. Most reported injuries were knee-, calve- and shin injuries. In total 69.1% of the RRIs recovered within 10 days.
The final risicomodel contained 4 risicofactors namely; previous injuries (OR 3.7) and running distance during the event (OR 1.3) increased the risk of a RRI. Higher age (OR 0.99) and a increased weekly running volume decreased injury risk slightly. Riskmodels between short- and long distance runners  vary minimally. In all models a previous RRI increases the injury risk, and a higher weekly running volume decreased the injury risk.

The public defence will take place at the Senate Hall, 1st floor Erasmus Building, location campus Woudestein. The ceremony will begin exactly at 13.00 PM. In light of the solemn nature of the ceremony, we recommend that you do not take children under the age of 6 to the first part of the ceremony.
