Brief summary on the aim of the doctoral thesis:
Kidney transplantation (KT) still is the treatment of choice for end stage renal disease. Ischemia reperfusion injury (IRI) is an inevitable consequence of KT, where the kidney graft experiences ischemia during donation, transport and implantation. At reperfusion, a sudden influx of oxygen rich blood causes even more damage, resulting in an inflammatory cascade called IRI. IRI is a risk factor for delayed graft function (DGF), acute rejection and even chronic rejection and graft loss. Therefore, measures to protect the kidney against IRI are being studied.
Besides research to prevent IRI, many studies are conducted to find a sensitive and early biomarker to measure the severity of IRI. This way, damage caused by IRI can be measured more specifically, or possibly even graft quality can be assessed before transplantation and transplant outcome can be predicted.
