Summary:
Inequalities shape our society, they persist over time and they even reinforce over time. This thesis investigates the behavioral economics of societal inequalities by means of several experiments spanning from several subfields of applied microeconomics. For example, low mental health status hinders human capital accumulation among young people as well as it distorts people’s beliefs on their own skills, which lead to a misallocation of talent in the labor market. Women’s beliefs about the gender gap in salary negotiation might lead them to under-invest in their negotiation skills because they are worried of perceived backlash from potential employers. Thus, this under-investment might contribute to the gender wage gap even further.
