Summary:

Extensive research has been done to lower and mitigate complications after pancreatic surgery. Unfortunately, it remains burdened by a high rate of complications, especially postoperative pancreatic fistulas (POPF). The results of this thesis may help to enhance surgical outcomes by contributing to a more personalised approach to pancreatic surgery. It is crucial to recognise and treat complications after pancreatic surgery in an early stage. Especially in the case of POPF, as this could lead to haemorrhage, intraabdominal infection and sepsis.1 Failure-to-rescue is defined as mortality after a major complication, and this is an important quality indicator of surgical care.2, 3 Over the past decades, the failure-to-rescue rate has decreased significantly.4 Biomarkers that enable the identification of patients at high risk of developing complications and allow for early intervention could further reduce the failure-to-rescue rate.
