On 4 February 2022, J.L.D. Schram will defend her PhD dissertation, entitled: ‘Educational Inequalities in Paid Employment: The role of ill health and working conditions’.

With increased pressure to work until older age, one of the major challenges for Western societies lies in ensuring that the more vulnerable groups, such as low educated workers
and those in ill health, will be able to remain at work until retirement age. The objectives of this thesis are therefore threefold:

  1. To study health-related educational inequalities in paid employment and in exit from paid employment.
  2. To study working conditions and health behaviour as possible explanations for educational inequalities in paid employment and health.
  3. To quantify the effect of working conditions and ill health in educational inequalities in working life expectancy and working years lost.

Two European longitudinal datasets (EU-SILC; SHARE) as well as two large longitudinal national datasets (Dutch: STREAM; Finnish: FLEED) were used for secondary dataanalyses
and, where applicable, linked to register data to answer these objectives.

The PhD defences will not take place publicly in the usual way. A live stream link has been provided to candidate. The ceremony will begin exactly at 13.00.
