Summary:
In more recent years, there has been an increasing focus on personalised medicine and medical decision making, together with an increase in the volume of data available and the quality thereof. This has led to a substantial effort in the development of methods capable of analysing the varying and complex disease dynamics under study, such as the joint model.
These models have been widely used in health studies, and offer many advantages, such as (a) addressing measurement error and missing data in time-dependent covariates in survival regression models, (b) increasing efficiency in statistical inference by utilizing both the longitudinal and survival data simultaneously, and (c) understanding and quantifying the association between longitudinal and survival processes. Multiple extensions to the joint model have allowed for the incorporation of additional longitudinal outcomes, multiple recurrent or competing events, or more complex association structures. In this thesis, we introduce an alternative association structure parameterization, and explore methods to address the prohibitive computational complexity encountered in cases where there are a large number of longitudinal outcomes.
