Below is a brief summary about the dissertation:
Despite increasing survival and major advances in treatment options, we clearly observe heterogeneity in the response to the current treatment options in metastatic prostate cancer patients. Upfront identification of those patients that will respond poorly to a given treatment could help in designing novel treatment strategies in metastatic prostate cancer. Biomarkers are therefore needed to improve the treatment effect in a more tailored fashion, selecting those patients that need more intensified treatment as well as to obtain the right balance between quality of life and treatment outcome. In this thesis our aim was to look further into liquid biopsy based markers and whether they could fulfill our need for better prognosticating patients, designing novel treatment strategies but also to select patients that would not benefit from intensification of the treatment but rather would benefit of de-escalation of treatment.
