Below is a brief summary of the dissertation:

This PhD research explores the impact of hearing loss from both a population and clinical perspective. Using data from the large-scale Rotterdam Study, it describes the prevalence of age-related hearing loss and its growing implications for healthcare. Within the cochlear implant (CI) team at Erasmus MC, several studies aimed to improve accessibility and efficiency of hearing care, including the development of a multidisciplinary single-day CI intake protocol and the use of transparent face masks to enhance communication for individuals with hearing loss. Based on these findings, Erasmus MC has implemented hospital-wide availability of transparent face masks and established the single-day CI intake as standard care in the ENT department. Together, these projects demonstrate how research can translate into tangible, patient-centered innovations that address hearing loss as both a clinical and societal challenge
