Dissertation in short:

The research described in this thesis focusses on the main question which role a unique protein of the immune system, called interleukin-17A (IL-17A), plays in the inflammation process in the joint and in the skin. IL-17A is a ‘messenger’, involved in the communication between different cells. Is the role of this ‘messenger’dependent on the type of inflammation where it is acting and will it be influenced by differences in target cells present at the site of inflammation? To study this we used two types of joint inflammatory conditions (types of arthritis) and two types of skin disorders. We found that IL-17A is involved in both joint and skin inflammation, showing overlap but also distinction depending on the type of inflammation. This information is important because it will help to stratify disease types and to fine-tune therapeutic treatment options for patients suffering with these types of diseases.
