The Dynamics of Inclusive Prosperity Initiative at Erasmus University Rotterdam has the pleasure of inviting you to a Roundtable on the recent Rockhopper v. Italy Award.
In August 2022, an ICSID tribunal found that Italy had breached the Energy Charter Treaty by denying the issuance of a permit to the claimant to extract hydrocarbons in the Ombrina Mare oil and gas field located off Italy’s eastern coast. The tribunal concluded that the dismissal of the Rockhopper’s application for a production concession constituted a direct and unlawful expropriation and ordered Italy to pay EUR 190 million plus interest to the claimant.
