DRAFT What we stand for

Mission & Strategy
Library building

By making knowledge as open as possible, we enhance both the scientific and societal impact of Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR). We welcome visitors not only from within the university, but also from beyond it, and we make the majority of our services freely available to anyone who wants to discover or share knowledge.

Open Access publishing is our standard: we ensure that EUR’s scholarly publications are as accessible as possible, reaching a broad audience without unnecessary barriers. Our mission is to provide access to knowledge and foster intellectual growth — ‘to make minds matter'. We bring this mission to life through our core values:

  • OPEN - We believe in an open approach to knowledge. We stimulate innovation and contribute to a level playing field for science and society through transparency, Open Access, and open data.
  • PROACTIVE - We do not wait and see — we think ahead. We identify needs, offer tailored solutions, and help our users get the most out of our services.
  • COLLABORATIVE – We work across boundaries: between disciplines, departments, and institutions. Within EUR and beyond, we actively seek collaboration to enhance knowledge sharing and increase impact.
  • RELIABLE – We stand for quality, continuity, and expertise. Users can rely on consistent, accessible, and secure services.

These values form the foundation of our way of working. They guide us in how we open up knowledge, how we support one another, and how we contribute to the growth of both the academic and societal community.

Where we are headed

The University Library operates in a rapidly changing academic landscape, driven by technological innovation and new ways of learning, researching, and collaborating. With our Strategic Plan 2025–2030, we build on these developments and actively contribute to the strategic direction of Erasmus University Rotterdam.

Library building

Our strategic priorities

Building on the framework of the EUR strategy, we define our own direction for development over the next five years:

A learning and collaborative community

We strengthen a culture in which learning, knowledge sharing, and collaboration are central. We do this by deepening our educational support, investing in the development of our staff, and creating inclusive spaces that foster connection and interdisciplinarity.

Greater research impact through Open Science

We support researchers in adopting Open Science practices, increase the visibility and accessibility of EUR research, and strengthen digital skills within the academic community.

Social engagement and knowledge sharing

We make our collections and programmes widely accessible and use our role as a knowledge centre to foster dialogue, culture, and public engagement.

Future‑proof services

We invest in modern technology, sustainable infrastructure, and the continuous improvement of our processes, enabling us to respond flexibly to the needs of our users and partners.
