Work is taking place in the University Library (UL) between July 14 and Aug. 11 to install six automatic door closers. The accessible restrooms and accessible study areas will soon be more accessible thanks to the door closers.
The heavy doors made the accessible study areas and restrooms in the library difficult to access for people with mobility impairments. That problem will soon be solved. The installation of the door machines is expected to cause little inconvenience, in part because it is scheduled during the summer vacation.
Successful pilot
In 2023, Real Estate & Facilities already conducted a pilot with two door closers on floor 0 (skybridge level) of the UL because the doors were difficult to open due to their heaviness and made a loud noise when closing. Prior to the project, Vincent Rodenburg, Project Leader of RE&F, visited the library with a number of users to discuss exactly what was needed. The pilot proved successful, so now the remaining six doors will be fitted with electric door closers.
Improved campus accessibility
This project is part of a series of improvements (MyEUR) being implemented by the Real Estate & Facilities Department to improve the physical accessibility of the campus. Because EUR values making everyone feel welcome on campus, RE&F is actively deploying budgets to resolve accessibility issues and launch new initiatives.
