Student platform INCLUDED of the Hogeschool Rotterdam presents the theater performance Parbo Oema by Rosa Weekers plus an aftertalk at the Central Library in Rotterdam on February 22. Parbo Oema is a solo performance about living between two cultures. When Rosa moves from Suriname to the Netherlands to study, she suddenly feels she has to present herself. Is she a Surinamese woman or a Dutch one?
Rosa decides she is a Surinamese woman just like her mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. But she is nothing like them... She is much lighter, doesn't speak Sranan Tongo and can't cook nearly as well. So what makes her a Surinamese woman? In Parbo Oema, Rosa explores who THE Surinamese woman is. Where she comes from. What drives her and what she passes on to her daughters, the Surinamese women of tomorrow.
The performance is followed by a panel discussion where Rosa talks with students and teachers from Hogeschool Rotterdam about the benefits and challenges of having a bi-cultural identity in education. What important role does education play in identity development? What questions are you asking yourself or being asked? What are you running into? And above all, what do you need to be able to make your cultural identity not a burden, but a strength?
