Appointment and visit Arjun Appadurai

Arjun Appadurai has recently been appointed as an Honorary Professor in Erasmus University's Department of Media and Communication and the Erasmus Research Centre of Media, Communication and Culture (ERMeCC). He will be visiting Erasmus University in May-June 2015.  In 2013, he received an Honorary Doctorate from Erasmus University Rotterdam at the occasion of the university’s 100th anniversary.

Arjun Appadurai is the Paulette Goddard Professor in Media, Culture and Communication at New York University and an Honorary professor in Erasmus University's Department of Media and Communication. He also holds visiting positions at the Tata Institute for Social Sciences (Mumbai, India) and The Max Planck Institute for the Study of Ethnic and Religious Diversity (Gottingen, Germany). Prof. Appadurai has published widely on the topics of globalization, transnational media, cities and the relationship of economics and culture. His most recent book is The Future as Cultural Fact: Essays on the Human Condition (Verso, 2013) and his forthcoming book is called Banking on Words: The Failure of Language in the Age of Derivative Finance (Chicago: In Press). Read more

Public lecture Ecologies of Failure

On Wednesday, May 27, professor Appadurai will give a public lecture, entitled Ecologies of Failure, in which he will look at failure as an important and instructive feature of all human projects, careers, missions and visions. Students, researchers, and other interested parties who would like to attend the lecture, can register online via the ERMeCC website.

Two-session seminar Innovation and Failure

On Friday May 29 and Wednesday June 3, Professor Appadurai will lead a two-session seminar, entitled Innovation and Failure,  for researchers and PhD students who are interested in exploring the relationship between failure and innovation with particular reference to science and technology. Participants are expected to partake in both sessions. The number of participants is limited and priority will be given to researchers and PhD students who are associated with ERMeCC. Researchers and PhD students from other  departments, faculties or universities who would like to participate are invited to send an e-mail to ms. Evelien Meeuwisse at meeuwisse@eshcc.eur.nl before May 20, in which they provide some details about their current position and research project as well as a brief motivation why they would like to participate.
