Development of a System for Early Detection of Gambling Harm Receives ZonMW Grant

Gambling harm has far-reaching consequences for individuals, families, and communities. In the Netherlands, there is a lack of a system for early detection and referral, especially in social and primary care. Professionals often lack the knowledge and resources, resulting in gambling harm being recognised too late. Clinical psychologists Dr. Marilisa Boffo and Miranda Lutz-Landesbergen from Erasmus University Rotterdam have received a grant of € 500,000 from the ZonMW Prevention of Gambling Addiction programme.

The project "Implementation of a Community-Based Detection and Referral Network for Gambling Harm’’  brings together a network of professionals in Rotterdam to recognize gambling harm early and improve access to care.

Approach

Using a Community-Based Participatory Research approach, researchers, professionals, and experts by experience collaborate on network mapping, interviews, training, and co-creation to develop and implement network structures, screening methods, and referral tools.

Research partners

The consortium combines scientific and professional expertise, lived experience, and local community knowledge. Its members represent key roles in Rotterdam's gambling harm detection and referral network, covering the expertise needed for project implementation. Stakeholders include Erasmus University Rotterdam, Rotterdam Municipality, Antes Zorg (mental and addiction care), and Rijnmond Dokters (primary care).

We hope that our project will result in a functional network, better tools, and improved access to care to reduce gambling harm in Rotterdam,” says Marilisa Boffo, one of the consortium leaders.
