How much confidence do you have in robots? Find out at the 2014 U-Meet on Robotics!

Umeet in The Hague, EUR cooperates with Leiden and Delft

Erasmus University Rotterdam, Delft University of Technology and Leiden University are holding a U-Meet conference to discuss robotics on 2 October 2014. During this conference entitled ‘How much confidence do you have in robots?’, scientists from these three universities will mainly be discussing the use of robots in the care sector. Should care be taken over by robots, or should it remain in human hands? Who should be held liable if a robot makes a mistake? The conference also includes workshops on robot construction and drones, and ESHCC researcher Etienne Augé will be giving a talk on science fiction and our impressions of robots. EUR professor Jos de Mul will open and close the conference.

The U-Meet on ‘Confidence in Robots’ will be held in The Hague on Thursday, 2 October. Although experts are unable to agree on the rate at which robots will be put into service and the extent to which they will take over our work, it is certain that robots will become part of our society at some stage. Robots come in all shapes and sizes and they can be programmed to perform various tasks. They might resemble humans or animals, but they could also look completely different in order to enable them to carry out their work easily. Since robots will soon be part of our lives, it is important to examine the ethical, technical, social and legal aspects.

U-Meet on ‘Confidence in Robots’
During the conference, lawyer Bibi van der Berg of Leiden University, PhD psychology student Roy de Kleijnof Leiden University and robot researcher Joost Broekens of Delft University of Technology will examine certain issues relating to robots in the care sector. Should care be taken over by robots, or should it remain in human hands? Who should be held liable if a robot makes a mistake? Internet sociologist Chris van ‘t Hof will be in the chair, while EUR professor of Philosophical Anthropology and Culture Jos de Mul will open and close the conference.

Workshops
After the debate, the public can choose from four workshops: ‘Build your own robot’ (with Lego Delft), ‘The impact drones have on our lives’ (with Marki of Iforesee Expo with Labs/Drone Lab), ‘How much confidence do you have in robots?’ (with Roy Kleijn of Leiden University) and ‘Science fiction and our impressions of robots’ (with Etienne Augié of EUR).

About U-Meet
The U-Meet conference on ‘Confidence in Robots’ on Thursday, 2 October, will take place during the run-up to the Science Weekend on 4 and 5 October, and is being organised in connection with the annual U-Meetheld by the Association of Universities in the Netherlands (VSNU), whose aim is to increase public support for scientific education and research. Science, politics and civil society will be coming together during the U-Meet to devise solutions to one of today’s social problems, and to encourage others to do the same.
Participation is free of charge, but it is essential that you register as a participant.
