‘Working as a student-ambassador for the Academic Outreach Programme is a good way to do something for children and youth in Rotterdam. They don’t only learn from me, but I also learn so much from them! I admire the perseverance and adaptability that they show throughout the classes.’ - Sofia, student-ambassador for the Academic Outreach Programme from the Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR).

The Academic Outreach Programme 'Connecting Our Future' was established by the Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR) in the summer of 2020 to contribute to equal opportunities in education for children and youth in Rotterdam. The programme works closely with elementary schools, secondary schools, and social organisations in the city Rotterdam.

The activities and events of the Academic Outreach Programme are carried out by students from EUR, known as student-ambassadors. Students are specifically selected and receive extensive training for their work in the city and on the EUR campus. On May 16th, the student-ambassadors gathered with project lead Lisenne Giel and educational specialist Marianne den Hertog to reflect on the past school year in which they were first deployed.

Impressive achievements

The day began with a reflection on their impressive achievements. The group of now 34 student-ambassadors collaborated with 10 schools and six societal partners during the past school year. In these close collaborations, they implemented 10 different outreach programmes and reached over 2000 children and youth. After this wonderful review of results, interactive activities were used to reflect on the growth that the student-ambassadors experienced in their teaching skills and in their role as role models. Because the experiences and opinions of the student-ambassadors are highly valuable for the continuous development of outreach programmes, the group also dedicated time to receive feedback from the student-ambassadors.

After a successful day filled with reflection, the day ended with a game of Jeu de Boules at Mooie Boules and delicious snacks. The Academic Outreach Programme team is excited to have these talented student-ambassadors on board and looks forward to the great achievements for the next school year!
