Liesbet van Zoonen appointed member of Academia Europaea

Socioloog Liesbet van Zoonen benoemd tot lid Academia

The Academia Europaea is the European association of scientists who are among the global top in their respective fields. The academia is composed of over three thousand European scientists from the whole range of academia and has dozens of Nobel laureates among its members. Liesbet van Zoonen is professor of Sociology at Erasmus University Rotterdam. 

Professor Liesbet van Zoonen is also Dean of the Erasmus Graduate School of Social Sciences and the Humanities and academic director of the Leiden-Delft-Erasmus Centre for Big, Open and Linked Data Cities (BOLD Cities) and of the Knowledge Workshop Urban Big Data, a collaboration with the municipality of Rotterdam.

Previously, she worked at the University of Amsterdam, and till December 2015 was professor in Media and Communication at Loughborough University (UK). She also held various positions at other universities, such as professor at the University of Oslo (Norway) and as visiting professor at the University of the West Indies (Jamaica) and the Hochschule für Film und Fernsehen (Germany).

Her research covers a wide range of topics in the social sciences and the humanities, but all relate to the question of whether and how popular culture is a relevant source for understanding civil and social participation. Her current research focusses on public and individual taboos and needs on 'identity management'. Her research on Urban Big Data focusses on the perspective of citizens.

About Academia Europaea

The Academia Europaea was founded in 1988 and aims to promote learning, teaching and research. It plays a role in the development of European science policy, for instance through a seat in the European Academies Science Advisory Council (EASAC), which advises a variety of European institutions on research related matters.
