The Executive Board of Erasmus University Rotterdam has appointed Professor Van Selm (1968) as Dean of Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication (ESHCC). Van Selm is professor of Communication Science at the University of Amsterdam (UvA). Her appointment comes into effect on November 1, 2020. She succeeds interim dean Professor Frank van der Duijn Schouten that has been in this function since June 24, 2019. The Executive Board is extremely grateful to prof. dr. Frank van der Duijn Schouten for his exceptional dedication and valuable work as acting dean of ESHCC.
Co-shaping future ambitions of ESHCC
Both the advisory committee and the faculty council are positive about Van Selm’s appointment. They have strong confidence in her ability to help shape the future ambitions of ESHCC. Rutger Engels, the EUR’s rector magnificus, is also pleased with the appointment: “Not only does Martine van Selm have an excellent academic track record, but, with her managerial experience and her deep knowledge of the processes that operate at a wider university level, she will be able to provide excellent leadership to the faculty ESHCC.”
Of her new appointment Martine van Selm herself says: “I am very pleased to start as Dean of the ESHCC. The faculty has a great deal of expertise in the fields of media, culture and history and the interfaces between these three areas. ESHCC researchers, teachers and students make a unique contribution to the university, the city of Rotterdam and the Humanities in the Netherlands and abroad. I am honored to be able to give further shape to this as Dean.”
About Martine van Selm
Van Selm is professor of Communication Science, in particular Social Perception in Organisations, at UvA’s Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences, and holds this chair within the Corporate Communication program group of the Amsterdam School of Communication Research (ASCoR). Between 2010 and 2020 she was director of the College of Communication.
In 1998, Van Selm obtained her PhD from Radboud University Nijmegen on the subject of meaninglessness in the second half of life. Since then, she has combined her gerontological expertise on ageing with her background in communication science. From 1998 to 2010, she held a post at Radboud University’s departments of Communication Science and Social Science Research Methods. Van Selm has received various grants for education innovation and research within, among other things, the Socially Responsible Innovation programme of the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO).
Van Selm is chair of the Foundation for Scientific Research on Commercial Communication (SWOCC), a member of the Advisory Board of Windesheim University of Applied Sciences’ Journalism programme and has had seats on several national and international teaching review committees.
