Choose your packaging wisely

If you’ve made any New Year’s resolutions, there’s a fair chance that losing some weight is one of them. Just like last year. And the year before. But that large bag of crisps or that huge piece of your mom’s apple pie is so hard to resist… How do you downsize among all those supersizes? Look for packaging that recommends a portion size!

People eat more when they’re being served more – and we’re increasingly being served more. And that’s what’s making us bigger and bigger. Behavioral economist Iris Versluis looked at various ways in which this ‘big portions-effect’ can be prevented. She found out that people are capable of restraining themselves – if they get some help. If the packaging of their snack contains an image of the amount that’s ‘decent’ to eat, people are actually encouraged to follow that advice.
