dr. BA (Binyam Afewerk) Demena

Biography

Binyam Afewerk Demena is Associate Professor of Development Economics at the International Institute of Social Studies, Erasmus University Rotterdam. His research centres on the economics of global interactions, with particular emphasis on international trade, foreign direct investment, economic integration, economic sanctions, and firm-level productivity. He also works on energy and environment, meta-analysis, and the links between globalization and health. His research is interdisciplinary in scope and has been published in leading peer-reviewed journals across economics, development studies, energy, and health, including World Development, Economic Analysis and Policy, Applied Economic Perspectives and Policy, Energy Economics, Resource and Energy Economics, Energy Policy, Environmental and Resource Economics, Labour Economics, Journal of Economic Surveys, AIDS Patient Care and STDs, Applied Economics, and Third World Quarterly.
He has served as a reviewer for numerous international journals, including World Development, Journal of International Economics, Energy Policy, Energy Economics, Journal of Development Economics, International Trade and Economic Development, Applied Economics, Journal of Economic Surveys, The World Economy, and European Journal of Development Research, among others. He currently serves as Associate Editor for the Journal of Asian Business and Economic Studies.
Alongside his research, he teaches courses in international trade and investment, research methodology, and critical evaluation of scientific literature. He has developed a MOOC on trade and investment focused on evidence-based policy for development.
He maintains academic affiliations with the University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City and the National Economics University in Vietnam. He holds a BA in Economics from the University of Asmara and an MA in Development Studies (Development Economics) from the International Institute of Social Studies, Erasmus University Rotterdam. Before his graduate studies, he worked as a lecturer and research fellow at SMAP – Institute of Training, Education and Consultancy and held various roles in governmental institutions in Eritrea.
