M (Mara) Fennema

Biography

Mara Fennema is a PhD candidate at the Erasmus Movez Lab, a research team with a shared interest in young people, digital media, and wellbeing.

Research
Mara's PhD project focuses on how phone measures in the home context—such as screen time limits or active discussions about screen use—affect the physical, social, and mental well-being of adolescents. She zooms in on the question: which phone measures work, for whom, and in which context? Through participatory action research, adolescents and their caregivers are actively involved in the research process. The ultimate goal is to develop a toolbox with evidence-based phone measures that are tailored to adolescents' characteristics and diverse home contexts, and that truly help and support adolescents in healthy phone use.

This PhD-project is part of the At Home and in the Locker-project (Thuis én in de Kluis-project), a collaboration between Radboud University, Erasmus University Rotterdam, and societal organisations. In general, this project focuses on phone measures—both at home and at school—and adolescents' well-being.

Bio
Mara holds a Bachelor's degree in Sociology and a Master's degree in Pedagogical Sciences from Erasmus University Rotterdam.
