First Air Freight Monitor clarifies Schiphol position

Luchtvracht

The trade association Air Cargo Netherlands (ACN) is presenting an Air Freight Monitor for the first time today, Thursday 21 March. Researchers from Erasmus Centre for Urban, Port and Transport (UPT) have investigated the economic value of air freight for 2017. Senior researcher Floris de Haan: “This research shows the importance of Air Cargo at Schiphol and underlines the importance of having an excellent business climate in The Netherlands for companies using Air Cargo for their global supply chains."

The monitor prepared by Erasmus UPT provides insight into the employment and added value of air freight in the Netherlands. The researchers at Erasmus UPT use the same methodology for the research that has been used to publish the seaport monitor for 10 years.

More than 24 thousand jobs

The added value of air freight is marginally lower in 2017 than in 2015. Employment at Schiphol and the surrounding area has risen to 24,425 employed persons and the added value is around 2.15 billion. It is also striking that 2/3 of the employment and added value is realised at Schiphol itself and to a lesser extent in the surrounding municipalities.

To monitor the trend in airfreight, Erasmus UPT will also carry out an analysis for 2018, as soon as company figures are available for research.
