Different academic positions

Lecturer/Research Assistant (temporary or permanent)

A lecturer or research assistant provides (socially engaged) education to students within the university, develops teaching materials, and guides students in their academic progress. In addition, lecturers establish contacts with social partners. The emphasis is on transferring knowledge (both theoretical and applied) and supporting the educational process. There are four levels within the role of lecturer, with increasing responsibilities and qualification requirements.

Researcher/Postdoc/Postdoctoral Researcher (temporary position)

After completing a PhD, a postdoctoral researcher (postdoc) further explores scientific research, often within a temporary research project. Postdocs contribute to the development of their field by conducting research, increasingly in a multi- or transdisciplinary setting. They publish their findings in various media, such as journals, professional journals, and blogs.

Assistant Professor (initially temporary, then permanent)

A university lecturer combines teaching and developing or innovating education with conducting scientific and/or applied research within their own discipline or across disciplines. They also often hold leadership roles at a junior level and contribute to creating societal impact through various activities.

Associate Professor (permanent position)

An associate professor has a broader and more independent role than an university lecturer, with responsibility for teaching, research, and management. Associate professors develop new courses, lead (teaching) projects, supervise colleagues and PhD students, and often hold a coordinating or manager position within the department. Furthermore, they contribute to creating societal impact through their activities.

Full Professor/Professor

A full professor is the most experienced person in an academic position at the university and often has ultimate responsibility for research and teaching within a department or chair. Professors lead research groups and supervise PhD candidates and assist professors, and associate professors. They teach, develop, and innovate education, and represent their fields of expertise both within and outside the university. Through their activities, they contribute to creating societal impact.

PhD

All our faculties have their own PhD programmes, which comes down to a four-year programme during which the candidate conducts research on a particular topic under the supervision of a professor. More information about PhD programmes.
