Sustainability aspects play an important role for the Erasmus University Rotterdam in selecting (potential) suppliers. Erasmus University Rotterdam and other universities have signed the covenant ‘sustainable purchasing’ in 2012 with the former ministry of Housing, Spatial Planning and the Environment. This covenant agreed that 50% of purchasing should be labelled as sustainable.
In 2013 this goal was extended to 75%. Sustainability is therefore well anchored in tender procedures. Per tender, the possibilities to include sustainability are evaluated.
Assistant Purchasing Platform
But Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR) constantly improves her purchasing strategy. For example, EUR works together with the other universities within the Assistant Purchasing Platform. Within this platform, information and knowledge is shared, but also tools such as program requirements. And sometimes certain services/goods are purchased together. In 2016 the Assistant Purchasing Platform developed the growth model. Through this growth model all the tenders will be evaluated in terms of socially responsible purchasing. Through this model the efforts to purchase socially responsible are encouraged and made measurable.
For European tenders, EUR always uses the sustainability criteria of the Netherlands Enterprise Agency that are specially developed for European tenders. Furthermore, EUR endorses the OESO guidelines for Multinational Enterprises. These guidelines instructs how to deal with issues such as chain responsibility, human rights, child labour, the environment and corruption. EUR expects her suppliers to respect these guidelines and communicates this in her tender documents.
Currently, a new purchasing plan 2018-2020 is established in which sustainability is given a more prominent role than ever before.
