Abstract

We investigate how ownership distribution in new venture teams (NVT) is related to the novelty of a firm’s inventions. Our study considers two aspects of this relationship: the ownership distribution among NVT members, whether equal versus unequal, or with majority ownership, and the direct involvement of NVT members with ownership in R&D. Analyzing 5,114 inventive projects, we find higher novelty when a majority owner is among the NVT members and when members of an NVT with unequal ownership distribution participate directly in the inventive project. Our interviews suggest that this is due to how ownership distribution shapes decision-making. These insights contribute to our scholarly understanding of the interplay among a firm’s organizational structure, individual behavior, the idiosyncratic influence of inventor-entrepreneurs, and innovation.
