Updated Code of Ethics Now Available

We are pleased to share that the Code of Ethics for Research in the Social and Behavioural Sciences Involving Human Participants (Code 2024) has been updated. This revised version builds on the original 2016 Code and the 2018 revision, reflecting changes in research practice while staying true to its foundational principles.

Why this matters for ERIM researchers

Whether you are developing your dissertation, conducting fieldwork, leading large-scale projects, using the EBL or conducting online surveys, this Code remains a key reference for ethical research. It is especially relevant when preparing ethics applications.

Key updates include:

  • A more streamlined and accessible structure.
  • Stronger emphasis on ethical reflection, not just compliance.
  • Broader applicability across disciplines.
  • Continued use of the “Apply or Explain” principle, allowing justified deviations when ethically sound.

We encourage all ERIM researchers to review the new Code and reflect on how it supports your own work and responsibilities. The new Code can be accessed here: Nethics Code of Ethics 2024 (PDF).
